Big, Bold, and More Impressive Than Ever: A Buyer’s Guide to the 2024 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD

It’s no secret that choosing and buying a car can be a time-consuming and demanding process, given the numerous trims, features, add-ons, and accessories available. At Newton Chevrolet of Russellville, we are fully aware of how the automotive industry evolves year after year, and that’s why we’re here to help.
Of all the vehicles scheduled to debut, there’s a lot of excitement around the 2024 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD; with a new off-road-ready trim and several new improvements, it might seem difficult to pinpoint which version is ideal for you. As a certified Chevy Silverado 2500 dealer, we take great pride in keeping ourselves updated with the annual changes made by the bowtie brand.
Rather than simply break down every trim, we’ve made a category for each type of driver in the hope of helping you make a well-informed decision.
Going Big While Staying on Budget
Many truck drivers require a powerful engine and enough towing capability, but they also want to stay within their budget. Luckily, Chevy provides excellent options at an affordable price. The base trim of the Silverado 2500 HD—the Work Truck or WT—starts at an MSRP of only $46,395; this is considerably less than the RAM 2500, Ford Super Duty, and Nissan Titan XD.[a]
You can rest assured that Chevy delivers the goods from the ground up. The standard engine is a 6.6L V8 with 401 hp that can generate 464 lb-ft of torque; it’s paired with a ten-speed automatic transmission for ideal performance in the working world. At its best, the 2500 HD WT—with its gasoline-powered engine—can pull upwards of 16,000 lbs in conventional towing and 18,700 lbs when a fifth wheel or gooseneck comes into play. Your payload capacity is going to be better with the gas V8 than the diesel version, if only because of the heavier weight of the latter engine; with the gas V8, you can carry 3,689 lbs, while the diesel V8 will let you top out your bed at 3,615 lbs.
Chevrolet is committed to ensuring your safety during your travels, especially with their base model. In this respect, they’ve included a range of standard driver assistance features to assist you, such as Forward Collision Alert with Automatic Emergency Braking and Front Pedestrian Braking; these features help to maintain reaction time and keep an eye out for other drivers and pedestrians on the road. Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning and Following Distance Indicator are also available to support you in this effort. Even if you’re on a tight budget, Chevrolet is dedicated to providing you with the best possible value for your dollar.

The Silverado 2500 HD ZR2: For the Path Less Traveled
Among the exciting announcements for 2024 was one geared toward those drivers who love off-road adventures far from urban areas. The Silverado 2500 HD has been outfitted with Chevy’s ZR2 off-road trim to bring high performance to heavy duty. Similar to the other trims of the 2500 HD, the ZR2 will share the same amount of ground clearance, which measures past ten inches, and will also have the same gasoline-powered V8, although you can again opt for the highly capable Duramax Turbo-Diesel V8. With its 470 hp and 975 lb-ft of torque, the Turbo-Diesel can bring formidable force to the off-roader. Of course, there’s much more to the ZR2 trim than an elevated ground clearance and a V8.
Similar to the ZR2 versions of the Colorado and Silverado 1500, the 2500 HD will have plenty of features that allow for journeys on the path less traveled. These include 35-inch tires and a lifted suspension for greater terrain fortitude, as well as skid plates to protect the vital portions of your underbelly. An off-road drive mode will make any terrain relatively easier to navigate by tweaking torque and traction. Lastly, specially designed shocks mean your ride will be comfortable and casual even when surmounting treacherous, uneven, and rocky terrain.
To Tow or Not to Tow? That Is the Question
Maybe off-roading isn’t in your wheelhouse; perhaps you have some heavy burdens to carry and some big loads to hook up and tow. Well, you’re in luck because the Silverado 2500 HD is built for those arduous tasks that make lesser vehicles slink away. If you’re looking to utilize the 2500 HD for its payload capabilities, we recommend that you go with the regular cab with the gasoline V8 and 2WD; this configuration allows for the aforementioned maximum payload of 3,689 lbs, which is more than ideal for jobs such as construction clean-up.
As for conventional towing, you’ll want something a little beefier. Having the NHT package on the crew cab and the diesel V8 under the hood will allow for a towing capacity of up to 20,000 lbs. This same configuration with 2WD is also highly capable with fifth wheel and gooseneck trailering, as your capacity then stretches to an astonishing 22,500 lbs. The term “workhorse” has never been more appropriate when describing the Silverado 2500 HD.
Chevy has shown a strong commitment to innovation by implementing technology to enhance the towing capabilities of the Silverado 2500 HD. Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert have been integrated into its trailering ability, allowing for improved reaction time and more oversight when transporting your cargo safely and efficiently.
Perhaps what we enjoy the most is the open-pore wood interior trimming, which instills a rustic feel with just a touch of refinement. Chevy’s attention to detail for the High Country trim is astonishing and can place the Silverado 2500 HD on par with the generous comforts of any foreign luxury sedan.
