  • Overview

Compact SUVs are all over the market, and for a good reason. They’re fuel-efficient, more spacious than a sedan, and come with a reasonable price tag. Since all compact SUVs offer similar features, choosing the right one can get tricky. This is where Chevy comes into the picture. Chevy has always been on top of its game with its compact SUV model, but the 2022 Chevy Equinox is even better than its predecessors. LED headlights, new exterior colors, and an available RS trim are just some of the things that make the 2022 Equinox so appealing.

Whether you’re a long-term Chevy fan, or you’re more about practicality and less about the brand, the new Equinox has all the comfort and tech you’ll ever need. It has standard Teen Driver Mode, a GM-exclusive safety feature for teenage drivers. The new Equinox also includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a standard safety suite, and a more appealing front fascia.

But don’t worry, this model still includes everything that we’ve loved about it for the past generation. It still offers an impressive fuel economy of 26 MPG in the city and 31 MPG on the highway, and 63.9 cubic feet of cargo space. Chevy doesn’t leave anything out, aside from removing the lesser L trim while lowering the LS, LT, and Premier’s MSRPs while adding in the more sophisticated RS trim. No losses, only upgrades.

  • Performance

Fuel efficiency and towing capacity are important factors when you’re buying any new SUV. Compact SUVs aren’t meant for any hardcore towing or labor, sure, but it’s nice to know that you can haul a small boat or trailer every once and a while if you need to. The 2022 Chevy Equinox’s 1.5-liter turbocharged I-4 engine helps it perfectly balance fuel economy and towing capabilities.

    Fuel Economy and Towing

The 2022 Chevy Equinox gets 26 MPG in the city, 31 MPG on the highway, and a combined 28 MPG with front-wheel drive. It also offers a standard 1,500-pound towing capacity, which is enough to haul most fishing boats, small cargo trailers, and even small campers. Towing capacity stays the same when you upgrade to available switchable all-wheel drive. The Equinox’s all-wheel drive feature does kick in to help with adverse weather and road conditions, though, and is good to have during cold winters or if you live in a rural area. The all-wheel drive Equinox is still fuel-efficient, too, with 25 MPG in the city, 30 MPG on the highway, and 27 MPG combined.

    Convenience

The new Equinox comes with helpful convenience features that enhance overall performance. One example of this is Front and Rear Park Assist, which are both standard on the RS trim and up. These technologies monitor the area ahead and behind the Equinox while you are parking and will send alerts when you’re getting too close to another object. New LED headlamps and LED daytime running lamps make it easier to see clearly during nighttime drives.

  • Safety

Safety features were once treated as a luxury, but that is quickly changing. Chevy is part of the shift to more accessible vehicle safety technologies. The 2022 Chevy Equinox includes Chevy Safety Assist as a standard package across all trim levels, and there are plenty of optional safety tech add-ons.

    Standard Chevy Safety Assist

The new Equinox offers four available trim levels, and no matter which one you choose, Chevy Safety Assist is standard. This safety suite includes the six following features:

    • Forward Collision Alert – Forward Collision Alert monitors the distance between you and the vehicle ahead and warns you when a front-end collision is likely.
    • Automatic Emergency Braking – Automatic Emergency Braking works in response to the Forward Collision Alert and can help stop the Equinox for you as long as you’re traveling under 50 mph.
    • Front Pedestrian Braking – This technology works like Forward Collision Alert and Automatic Emergency Braking but monitors the road for pedestrians, not vehicles. It sends alerts when a pedestrian is in front of the vehicle and can automatically apply the brakes and enhance braking when necessary.
    • Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning – Lane Keep Assist helps keep you centered in the appropriate lane, while Lane Departure Warning sends an alert when you start to lane-drift.
    • Following Distance Indicator – This shows you how many seconds you are behind the vehicle ahead. It will send alerts if you’re following too closely to another vehicle.
    • IntelliBeam Auto High Beam Assist – Automatically switches from high beam to low beam based on surroundings, light conditions, and traffic conditions.

It's great that Chevy includes all of these essential safety features standard across all trims. You can add on additional safety features such as Lane Change Alert with Blind Zone Alert, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and Adaptive Cruise Control by upgrading your trim or getting the appropriate package. Additional features like these can help improve safety and ease anxiety while enhancing driver and passenger comfort.

    Teen Driver Mode

You don't need to worry quite as much when your teen takes this car out. Teen Driver Mode is a standard GM-Exclusive feature that helps guardians better monitor teen driver safety. It includes a “report card” system that displays how many miles the teen has driven, how many times they’ve activated driver assistance features, and more. It also comes with features such as Buckle-to-Drive and volume audio limiters. This feature even comes with vehicle tracking and a custom curfew technology.

  • Interior

No matter how nice your vehicle looks, the truth is that you’re spending most of your time in the cab. It really is what’s inside that matters most. Luckily, the 2022 Chevy Equinox has plenty of space, comfort features, and conveniences that make its interior stand out.

    Cargo Capacity and Space

The compact SUV classification may not scream “spacious,” but the new Equinox defies assumptions with its 63.9 cu.ft. of max cargo volume. It can hold 29.9 cu.ft. when the seats are up, and it’s at max cargo capacity when the rear seats are folded down. This model includes 60/40-splitting second-row seats that fold down by section. Put simply, you can carry one or two rear passengers and extra cargo rather than folding down the entire bench seat and losing passenger space. The Equinox also comes with a hidden under-the-floor rear cargo compartment and an available hands-free liftgate for easy loading.

    Convenience Features

A 7-inch touchscreen Chevy Infotainment System comes standard but can be upgraded to an 8-inch system. It comes with built-in navigation, an available Wi-Fi hotspot, and wireless audio and phone connectivity. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also standard and are now wireless. Custom user profiles are available, so you don’t have to switch settings every time there’s a new driver. In addition to these features, Amazon users can add Amazon Alexa for an additional price. This feature can be used to control everything from your Equinox to your household Alexa-compatible items. Wireless charging is standard on the highest-level trim, the Premier trim.

You can use standard USB ports for charging or for wired phone connectivity, and there’s a built-in auxiliary cable for traditional music and audio streaming. The “Comfort & Convenience Package” is available on the LT trim and up and includes dual-zone automatic climate control, remote vehicle start, a hands-free power liftgate, and more. Dual-zone automatic climate control and a leather-wrapped steering wheel are standard on the RS, and the steering wheel is heated on the Premier trim.
